ABOUT CGH DEPARTMENT OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY

The otolaryngologists at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery are specialists in a wide range of ear, nose and throat (ENT) and head and neck problems. Our doctors are specialists in head and neck surgery, sinus and allergy disorders, sleep-disordered breathing, laryngology and voice disorders, hearing loss and ear disorders, evaluation of dizziness and imbalance, as well as tinnitus (‘ringing in the ear’). We work as a team, together with audiologists, vestibular (inner ear balance) therapists and speech therapists, to comprehensively manage every aspect of ENT care. We also have a CGH Sleep Lab for patients who require diagnostic sleep tests, etc.

The CGH Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery Department is highly committed to the communities it serves. In order to ensure that we will continue providing the best of care to our patients and their families, the development of our services is based on patient health needs assessment that is performed by the department regularly.

General ENT
  • Management of chronic cough
  • Tonsillectomy (removing the tonsils) and adenoidectomy (removing the adenoids)
  • Endoscopy and removal of foreign body in oral cavity (mouth), pharynx (throat), oesophagus (gullet or food pipe), nose and ears
  • Management of infections of the head, neck and upper respiratory tract

Rhinology / Allergy Service
  • Allergic rhinitis management, including sublingual immunotherapy
  • Allergy testing (skin prick test) and counselling
  • Management of acute and chronic sinusitis
  • Management of nasal polyps
  • Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and skull base surgery
  • Epistaxis (nosebleed)
  • Rhinoplasty (also called ‘plastic surgery of the nose’ or ‘nose job’)
  • Balloon sinuplasty (an endoscopic surgical procedure for the treatment of blocked nasal sinuses)

Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
  • Rhinoplasty and adjunctive facial surgery
  • Treatment of craniomaxillofacial trauma
  • Reconstructive surgery of the face, head and neck
  • Excision and reconstruction of facial cutaneous malignancies
Referral Criteria:
  • Craniomaxillofacial injuries
  • Facial, head and neck lesions in prominent areas requiring reconstructive surgery
  • Nasal obstruction with external deformities
  • Rhinoplasty

Voice / Swallowing Disorders
  • Video stroboscopic assessment of voice
  • Fibreoptic endoscopic examination evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
  • Speech rehabilitation / speech therapy
  • Phonosurgery (surgical procedures that maintain, restore, or enhance the human voice)
  • Spasmodic dysphonia
  • Ageing voice disorders
  • Laryngeal (voice box) botox / collagen injection
  • Thyroplasty & laser laryngeal surgery: treatments for laryngeal / throat cancer

Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)
  • Assessment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), including computer-assisted upper airway analysis
  • Sleep study (PSG) and other sleep tests (MSLT and MWT)
  • Airway pressure device treatment: continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bi-level positive airway ressure (BiPAP) therapy
  • Somnoplasty treatment
  • Pillar palatal implant procedure / pillar procedure
  • Reconstructive upper airway surgery for snoring / obstructive sleep apnoea including nose, palate, tongue and pharyngeal (throat) procedures
  • Bimaxillary mandibular advancement surgery
  • Integrated Sleep Service (ISS)  to treat sleep disorders with the expert advice of psychiatrists, psychologists, respiratory doctors, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) technologists, and additional inputs from sports physicians, oral and maxillofacial surgeons and bariatric surgeons.

Head and Neck Cancer
  • Managment of head and neck lumps
  • Managment of cervical lymph nodes
  • Cancers of the nose, mouth, tongue, pharynx (throat) and larynx (voicebox)
  • Tumors of endocrine glands such as thyroid and parathyroid

Paediatric ENT Service
  • Snoring (age > 12)
  • Tonsillitis (age > 12)
  • Ear infections (otitis media / otitis externa) (age > 7)
  • Sinusitis / nasal allergy (age > 7)

Otology Service
  • Implantable hearing aids (retro-X / middle ear implant / bone-anchored hearing aid (BAHA) / cochlear implant)
  • Hearing loss assessment
  • - tympanoplasty or eardrum repair
    - ossiculoplasty or the repair of the small bones in the middle ear
    - stapedectomy or a surgical procedure of the middle ear performed to improve hearing
    - mastoid surgery / mastoidectomy or surgery on the mastoid bone behind the ear
  • Facial nerve / Vestibulocochlear nerve disorders

Giddiness / Vertigo and Tinnitus Disorders
  • Giddiness and balance problems
  • Medical and surgical treatment for vertigo
  • Tinnitus evaluation and rehabilitation
  • Tinnitus retraining therapy

Audiology
  • Audiometry (hearing test)
  • Auditory brainstem response (ABR) test
  • Otoacoustic emission (OAE) test
  • Vestibular (balance) function tests
  • Hearing aid services
  • Tinnitus counselling

  • Allergy and sinus clinic for allergic rhinitis and sinonasal problems
